The name Arkansas was used by the early French explorers to refer to the Quapaw peoplea prominent indigenous group in the areaand to the river along which they settled. The term was likely a corruption of akansea, the word applied to the Quapaw by another local indigenous community, the Illinois. They are enigmatic as photos we now have of Janis

In a little picture entitled "Folly" she is sitting in a field of flowers as if shed just sprung Rosetta Stone language up. Janis is as familiar with all these hieroglyphs of Zeldas life as she might be of her own. She seems to bounce on and off the pages as if they were little gray mirrors as our eyes walk about the pages. Heres a drawing by Ring Lardner of Zelda thats been glued onto an old newspaper clipping. She is dressed in a winky Petty-girl jazzy coat as she steps onto this unexplained ledge of question marks. On a following page there is a more gloomy image entitled ominously "Recovered." The intense, staring, oscillating eyes, barely able to contain the madness behind them, glare out of a tensely drawn face framed by a short institutional haircut. What happened before and after these moments, an afternoon in the middle of a field in 1916? They are enigmatic as photos we now have of Janis. Janis is fascinated by and envious of Zelda at the same Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 time, this wild Southern girl named after a gypsy queen in a sentimental novel by her romantic mother, growing up with the century — the automobile, the airplane, all the supercharged cathexis of the American dream, which, similar to Janiss Zelda are magical chimeras bought with the currency of wishes, half fantasy, half object. Janis glumly points out the last photograph of Zelda in the book. Appropriately she is standing rather stiffly in the bucket of a huge crane as if about to be lifted off the earth. "How our love shone through any old trite phrase in a telegram," Scott wrote in one of his jottings collected in The Crack-Up. This sentence is realized in a photograph of Zeldas scrap-book where cables from Scott are pasted like little white clouds with devotional care. Growing up in the Deep South had a lot to do with the Rosetta Stone German concreteness of Janiss vision of herself — the gin-soaked barroom queen from Memphis — because the South with its ruminant, brittle gentility — like Tennessee Williams vulnerable romantic women whom Janis also resembled — seems to hoard up time, relatively sheltered as it is from the changes of a more fluid society.

Rosetta Stone cover star Johnny Depp also snagged a nomination, getting a Best Actor nod for his starring role in Sweeney Todd.On the music front, Jonny Greenwoods score for There Will Be Blood was disqualified from the competition despite already picking up a Critics Choice Award and getting nominated for a British Academy Award. Eddie Vedders omission is confusing, as his "Guaranteed" from Into the Wild seemed to be a shoe-in for Oscar love after winning a Golden Globe. The Best Song category is dominated by fairy tale film Enchanted, which took three of the five nominations.”Falling Slowly," co-written by the Frames Glen Hansard for the film Once, also received a nomination for Best Rosetta Stone Software Song. Barring Writers Strike-induced delays, the Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place February 24th.For Peter Travers take on the Oscar nominations and the events at the Sundance Film Festival, be sure to check out his blog here. And sleuths noticed that the goat logo on Foxboro Hot Tubs MySpace page is identical to the one that appeared on the Networks Website. But unlike the Network, Foxboro have two songs catching on at rock radio. The rollicking rave-up "Mother Mary" reached Number Sixteen on the Modern Rock chart in February, and "The Pedestrian" is starting to get spins too.”The songs stand alone regardless of any Green Day association," says Aaron Axelsen, music director at San Franciscos Live 105.”Id probably play these songs if they were a new band."But the disc poses a dilemma for retailers: How do you sell a CD by rock superstars when their name isnt on it? "Were not gonna put it under Green Day, were gonna put it under Foxboro Hot Tubs," says Andrew Gyger of Virgin Megastores.”But its enough of a high-profile project that people know Rosetta Stone Greek V3 about it." As for the possibility of an FHT tour, the band remains coy: "Maybe, for sure!"

Its got a storyline thats going to be very interesting, kind of loosely based on my life, but a cartoon version."Photo Gallery: Katy Perrys Best LooksThe show draws a lot of inspiration from the artists Will Cotton and Mark Ryden. Cotton who was the art director on Perrys "California Gurls" video incorporates candy and baked goods into his art. The New York sessions took place the day after McCartney had entered the US for the first time in two years, visa problems stemming from two marijuana violations now finally resolved. McCartney was cautious in his responses during the first two sessions. He and Linda remembered being on vacation in Scotland when they were first shown John Cheap Rosetta Stone Software Lennons lengthy interview (Rosetta Stone Number 74 and Number 75, January 21st and February 4th, 1971), and having been deeply hurt by it. At first he seemed to want to avoid the kind of controversy Lennons interview had generated but in later conversations he became freer with his answers. Because the various sessions were necessarily disconnected, our text does not follow in all cases the actual sequence of questions. For example, McCartneys discussion of his legal difficulties is compiled from three separate conversations. One of those discussions was prompted by an incident on a New York street. We were walking down 54th Street towards the New York office of Eastman and Eastman, attorneys — Lee and John Eastman, father and brother of Linda McCartney. A man in a gray suit with a colorful umbrella Rosetta Stone English approached McCartney and asked, "Mr. McCartney? This is for you."

Rosetta Stone' Goes Back to 'The '90s'

This article is taken from Rosetta Stones new book The 90s: The Inside Stories From the Rosetta Stone Spanish Decade that Rocked ( copy; 2010 by Collins Design, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers). Click here to order the book, go here to read more about it, or visit the HarperCollins web site to preview the pages. The Nineties as a musical era started late and ended early — kicked in by the scritchy-scratch power chords of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," ushered out by the doomy piano intro of ". . . Baby One More Time." Anti-pop defeated by pop — full circle, all apologies. Youve heard the story. But the real Nineties were richer, funnier and weirder than that, with fake grunge bands writing better songs than some of the real ones, Eighties holdovers U2 and R.E.M. reaching creative peaks with Achtung Baby and Automatic for the People, Metallica and the Black Crowes co-existing on MTV, Phish tending to the Deadhead nation Cheap Rosetta Stone Software after Jerrys passing — and Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer ceding their pop thrones in a few short years to Dr. Dre, Snoop and Eminem. Not to mention a curiously widespread desire to zig-a-zig-ah. The Key Rosetta Stone Covers of the Nineties Thats the messy musical decade that comes back to life in the Rosetta Stone articles collected in this book. Not since the Sixties had music mattered so much, or the stakes felt so high. Nirvana or Pearl Jam? Biggie or Tupac? Blues Traveler or Spin Doctors? The battles were on, and kids cared deeply about the outcomes. At the same time, the record industry was operating its starmaking machinery at peak efficiency — unaware that it was about to be melted down to make iPods. Madonna Recording New Album

Daniel Boczarski/Getty Images Madonna has begun work on her 12th studio album Rosetta Stone Spanish. "Its official.. Madonnas 1st day in the recording studio for the new album," her manager Guy Oseary tweeted yesterday. There is no official word as to who the pop icon will be working with on this new record, but it has been rumored that superstar DJs A-Trak and David Guetta will be involved. Photos: Madonna on the Cover of Rosetta StoneThis new record, which could come out by the end of the year, will be the singers first collection of new material since Hard Candy came out in 2008. That album, which included collaborations with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams went for an urban pop sensibility. If Madonna is indeed collaborating with Guetta and A-Trak, this could indicate a move in a hard electro-house direction. Today, he wears a light-blue T-shirt and jeans and sits in a folding metal chair. He is hunched over a Gibson SG, and his eyes are glued to his left hand as it skitters up and down the neck. Angus viciously bends the strings for the dirty, metallic squeals in the Black Ice single "Rock N Roll Train," solos in machine-gun spasms during "Smash Rosetta Stone Software N Grab" and doubles Malcolms meaty-chord riff in the Scott-era hit "Highway to Hell." But the only thing that moves, other than Angus fingers, is his left leg, pumping in time to Rudd and Williams steady swing. When Angus gets up from that chair, it is either for a cigarette break outside — Rudd, Johnson and the Youngs smoke like chimneys — or the drive back to the bands hotel. After rehearsal, over a pizza dinner, Angus recalls a session with producer Rick Rubin for AC/DCs 1995 album Ballbreaker. "He asked me, Dont you ever get off that stool and move around? " No, Angus replied. "Im not going to put on a show for myself — I want the music to be right first," he continues with a hard, proud tone in his voice. "I have to have substance first, to feel it in me, before I can do the show."That was always the thing for me — I want to play guitar," Angus says in a distinctive accent he shares with Malcolm, a mix of Scottish burr and Australian drawl that reflects their divided childhoods in Glasgow, where the brothers were born, and Sydney, after their Cheap Rosetta Stone Spanish family emigrated there in 1963. Without that suit, Angus confesses, "I would never have made the effort to get out there and have a presence.

The Rosetta Stones were the most successful live band of the decade as the rockers Rosetta Stone language 264 concerts over the past 10 years grossed over $869 million, good enough for Number One atop Billboards Top Touring Acts of the 2000s list. Only three artists surpassed the $800 million mark for the decade and are now able to brag to friends that they grossed more than most countries yearly gross national product: the Stones, U2 with $844 million and Madonna, who was both the top-grossing female and solo artist, with $802 million. While the Rosetta Stones took the decades crown, U2 were easily the most in-demand live act as all 288 shows the band performed this decade were sold out, a stat no other artist this decade can claim. Other notables on the list include Billy Joel at 10, the Eagles at 12, Metallica at 19 and Britney Spears at 21. If he wants to call me, my number is still the same.4. Good luck with the movie. BILLY JOEL"The movie hes referring to is Gnomeo and Juliet, which features music by John. Of course, its hard not to feel that the unhappy "message" he sent John privately differed slightly from his public statements. For those keeping track, this is the second time that Billy Joel has responded (through his publicist) to Elton Johns comments. "Ive enjoyed our Rosetta Stone Arabic relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him," Joel said in a statement last week. "Elton is just being Elton." But Fox did not speak to the other Stones. "I did try," he says, noting, "There is a tradition among Rosetta Stones of not having anything to do with each others books.

seek to learn Spanish abroad, so far we have discussed how to select a location (or locations), how long to study, whether to live with a host or with other students, and even the benefits of adding a sport component to your studies. Now we would like to cover another important that most people will find imperative. The topic of this article centers on how to find a good deal on your plane ticket. By following these guidelines, you can potentially avoid wasting hundreds of dollars on high cost flights! When you are planning your trip it is key to realize that flexibility is important. Hence, you do not want to lock yourself into flights. After you arrive in Latin America, you want to have your schedule open. You may very well find that your itinerary changes, as you will invariably find that you like certain locations more or less than you anticipated. Further, you might find that you want to stay longer in a certain city to stay with someone that you have met during your travels. If you are planning an itinerary of more than one month and you have a flexible end-date, it is best to get a one-way ticket. Because of its modern infrastructure and moderate Rosetta Stone Chinese
regional accent, we recommend Buenos Aires as a good starting point for beginning Spanish speakers. If you are a frequent flyer of American Airlines, you can fly one-way to Buenos Aires for only 20,000 points. It is no longer necessary to book round-trip. Delta and United also have flights to Argentina. However, currently their frequent flyer programs do not match what American Airlines offers. If you are purchasing your flight tickets rather than using frequent flyer miles, consider arriving in Buenos Aires and flying out of Lima or another northern point. The ticket will cost less, and the airline will always let you upgrade to a Buenos Aires or Santiago return flight.Another excellent starting point for your travels is Lima. It is crucial to note the fact that many students who study Spanish abroad think they have a great itinerary set up. Yet, frequently students meet someone special sometime during their journey, and then their intended travel plan changes. Many students who plan to travel to Latin America to learn Spanish in Peru, Buenos Aires or Santiago, actually end up getting Rosetta Stone Chinese Levev 1-3
a job teaching English. As a result, they decide to stay in the country long-term. After all, native speakers are always in high demand. As a result, many travelers end up capitalizing on job opportunities that allow them to stay and explore different countries. By not booking a return ticket, you will leave yourself open to these sorts of possibilities. When booking tickets to study Spanish abroad, remember that often spending a little advance time researching various options can save you money. A few hours on the computer exploring flights can be well worth it. For example, often students have also had great luck finding low cost tickets on priceline. Our next article in the series will contain recommendations for travel within South America for those considering multi-country programs.

Suppose you were able to find the hidden space here.

In this case, the only information people possessed to Rosetta stone software
make their routing decisions was a set of descriptive attributes of the destined recipient his or her home base and occupations. People then determined who among their contacts was socially closest to the target. For aficionados of the Kevin Bacon game, the goal was to connect any actor in Hollywood to Bacon through the films he made. The success of Milgram s experiment indicates that social distances among individuals although they may be difficult to define mathematically have a role in shaping the network, and may also be essential for efficient navigation, said Claffy.Added Krioukov: When you know the network topology, you merely know the basic layout of a network. But when you discover its underlying geometry, or hidden space, you may know how this complex network really functions. Likewise, neural networks in the body would not function as well if they could not route specific signals to appropriate organs or muscles in the body, although no neuron has a full view of global inter-neuronal connectivity in the brain. The same can be said for the regulation of genes, which are turned on and off by regulator genes to manufacture Rosetta Stone Indian Levev 1-3
proteins. So, what accounts for this inherent communication efficiency of complex networks? The study suggests the existence of an underlying geometric framework that contains all the nodes of the network, shapes its topology and guides routing decisions: a hidden metric space. Distances in this space are akin to social distances in the small-world phenomenon. They measure similarity between people. The more similar the two persons, the closer they are in the social space, and the more likely they are friends, connected in the acquaintance network. To route a message, a person forwards it to the friend socially closest to the message destination, as illustrated in Figure 1 (below). Such routing allows networks to efficiently find intended communication targets even though they do not have a global view of the system, said Claffy. The primary motivation for this study, according to Krioukov, was the constantly increasing size and dynamics of the Internet, leading to increasing incidences of routing bottlenecks. Discovery of the Internet s hidden metric space would allow messages to be forwarded to destinations based on local measurements of similarities between nodes, their positions in the hidden space, rather than on their positions in the network, which requires global measurements of its structure.Krioukov also suggests that reconstruction of hidden metric spaces underlying a variety of real complex networks may have other practical applications. For example, hidden spaces in social or communications networks could yield new, efficient strategies for Rosetta Stone Greek Levev 1-3
searching for specific individuals or content. The metric spaces hidden under some biological networks also could lead to powerful tools for studying the structure of information or signal flows in these networks. This could be applied to cancer research, for example, whose studies rely heavily on gene regulation, he said. One could then figure out what drives gene regulation networks and what drives them to failure. This would be an important contribution to the field. Happiest places have highest suicide rates, new research finds

The new research paper titled Dark Rosetta stone
Contrasts: The Paradox of High Rates of Suicide in Happy Places has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Economic Behavior Organization. It uses U.S. and international data, which included first-time comparisons of a newly available random sample of 1.3 million Americans, and another on suicide decisions among an independent random sample of approximately 1 million Americans. The research confirmed a little known and seemingly puzzling fact: many happy countries have unusually high rates of suicide. This observation has been made from time to time about individual nations, especially in the case of Denmark. This new research found that a range of nations -- including: Canada, the United States, Iceland, Ireland and Switzerland, display relatively high happiness levels and yet also have high suicide rates. Nevertheless the researchers note that, because of variation in cultures and suicide-reporting conventions, such cross-country scatter plots are only suggestive. To confirm the relationship between levels of happiness and rates of suicide within a geographical area, the researchers turned to two very large data Rosetta Stone Spanish
sets covering a single country, the United States. The scientific advantage of comparing happiness and suicide rates across U.S. states is that cultural background, national institutions, language and religion are relatively constant across a single country. While still not absolutely perfect, as the States are not identical, comparing the different areas of the country gave a much more homogeneous population to examine rather than a global sample of nations.Comparing U.S. states in this way produced the same result. States with people who are generally more satisfied with their lives tended to have higher suicide rates than those with lower average levels of life satisfaction. For example, the raw data showed that Utah is ranked first in life-satisfaction, but has the 9th highest suicide rate. Meanwhile, New York was ranked 45th in life satisfaction, yet had the lowest suicide rate in the country. The researchers then also tried to make their comparison between States even fairer and yet more homogeneous by adjusting for clear population differences between the states including age, gender, race, education, income, marital status and employment status. Even with these adjustments. This still produced a very strong correlation between happiness levels and suicide rates although some states shifted their positions slightly. Hawaii then ranks Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) Levev 1-5
second in adjusted average life satisfaction but has the fifth highest suicide rate in the country. At the other end of the spectrum, for example, New Jersey ranked near the bottom in adjusted life satisfaction (47th) and had one of the lowest adjusted suicide risks (coincidentally, also the 47th highest rate). The researchers (Professor Andrew Oswald from the University of Warwick, Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu of Hamilton College and Mary C. Daly and Daniel Wilson both from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco) believe the key explanation that may explain this counterintuitive link between happiness and suicide rates draws on ideas about the way that human beings rely on relative comparisons between each other.University of Warwick researcher Professor Andrew Oswald said: Discontented people in a happy place may feel particularly harshly treated by life. Those dark contrasts may in turn increase the risk of suicide. If humans are subject to mood swings, the lows of life may thus be most tolerable in an environment in which other humans are unhappy.Professor Stephen Wu of Hamilton College said: This result is consistent with other research that shows that people judge their well-being in comparison to others around them. These types of comparison effects have also been shown with regards to income, unemployment, crime, and obesity.

Interactive media improved patients

Researchers from the University of Rosetta stone
Melbourne, Australia, randomised 40 patients due to undergo radical prostatectomy into two groups. The first group went through the standard surgery consent process, where staff explained the procedure verbally, and the second group watched the IMP.Both sets of patients were then asked to answer 26 questions on the surgery they were due to undergo. 78 per cent of the IMP group achieved high test scores, compared with 57 per cent of the control group. When they switched the two groups over, the control group's score went up by 11 per cent after the IMP, with the group who had originally seen the presentation showing no change. Our standard consent process comprised of patients receiving detailed information about the procedure from physicians and nurses, while the IMP provided consistent and animated information on the same topic explains co-author Dr Nathan Lawrentschuk from the University's Department of Rosetta Stone Spanish
Urology. The 51-slide IMP covered basic anatomy, how the prostate works and how the operation is carried out. It also outlined possible complications and provided postoperative information. 22 of the slides contained interactive questions that had to be answered correctly before the patient could move on to the next slide.Patients completed the consent procedure about three-and-a-half weeks before their planned surgery. They had an average age of 61 and 70 per cent of the patients in both groups spoke English as their first language. Both groups had a similar education profile and the IMP only required minimal computer skills to complete. The standard consent procedure lasted an average of 20 minutes and the IMP took an average of 18 minutes to complete. Most of the patients found the IMP easy to use and were satisfied with the information provided.Radical prostatectomy is a major procedure to remove the prostate gland and the cancer it contains stresses Dr Lawrentschuk. It is vital that patients facing major surgery are fully informed of the risks and benefits so that they can provide informed consent. But before they can do this, they must have a functional understanding of the information provided. We believe that using the IMP provides a better level of patient understanding than standard consent, by ensuring that Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) Levev 1-5
the procedure and risks have been explained consistently and by actively testing the patient on the information they have received. It helps us to obtain ethical and legally informed consent, increase patient knowledge and reduce patient anxiety and potential dissatisfaction or legal consequences if the surgery is not as successful as anticipated. However, it is important to stress that patients using the IMP also had plenty of opportunities to raise any concerns they had about their procedure, and their general health, with medical staff during their pre-surgical assessment. The authors point out that, although this particular IMP was developed for prostate cancer surgery, it has much wider potential and could be used by patients facing other kinds of surgery. Presentations could also be produced in a range of languages, with recorded voices replacing much of the text.Ultimately IMP might also be used for educating medical staff such as nurses, medical students and trainee surgeons adds Dr Lawrentschuk.

Older Adults Often Inaccurately Report Their Own Stroke History

Self-administered questionnaires are Rosetta stone
frequently used to obtain information about an individual's history of stroke, according to background information in the article. In general, self-reports on medical conditions that are well defined and relatively easy to diagnose often have a high positive predictive value, in contrast to conditions characterized by complex symptoms, the authors write. Stroke is associated with motor impairment but can also be accompanied by impairments in memory, sensation and speech or language, diminishing the ability of an individual to accurately report a history of stroke.Christiane Reitz, M.D., Ph.D., of Columbia University Medical Center, New York, and colleagues acquired MRIs for 717 Medicare recipients 65 years and older (average age 80.1) living in northern Manhattan. Participants underwent an in-person interview about general health and functioning, medical history, a physical and neurological examination Rosetta Stone Chinese
and psychological testing. They or their caregivers also completed an eight-question survey about stroke history, including whether they had ever had symptoms of or been told by a physician they had a stroke.A total of 85 individuals (11.9 percent) reported a history of stroke. On the MRI, evidence of a stroke was observed in 225 participants (31.4 percent). The sensitivity of self-reported stroke meaning number of individuals who reported having had a stroke divided by the total number of individuals with stroke detected on MRI was 32.4 percent. The specificity, or the number of individuals who reported having no history of stroke divided by the total number of individuals who had no evidence of stroke on MRI, was 78.9 percent.Lower-functioning memory, cognitive or language ability or presence of hypertension [high blood pressure] or myocardial infarction [heart attack] were associated with an increased frequency of false-negative reports, the authors write. In addition, younger individuals were more likely to accurately report their stroke history than older adults, and sensitivity was higher among African American than Rosetta Stone Chinese Levev 1-3
white or Hispanic individuals. Older adults may have more difficulty recalling prior events, contributing to lower sensitivity, the authors note. Rates of cerebrovascular disease are higher among African Americans, so individuals in this population may have an increased awareness of stroke signs and symptoms due to previous discussions with clinicians or contact with individuals who have had strokes. Our results indicate that sensitivity and specificity of stroke self-report are low when using MRI scans as validation, the authors conclude. In stroke research, sensitive neuroimaging techniques rather than stroke self-report should be used to determine stroke history. This study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health.
